Champagne Through The Movies

Champagne has featured prominently in the movies for decades and I get pretty excited when I see a movie star drinking one of my favourites, trying to spot the label, and maybe even the vintage.

THE NAME’S BOND, JAMES BOND
Probably the most notable would be the Bond franchise with dozens of references being made to Champagne, in particular Bollinger, Dom Pérignon and Taittinger.  Bond is also credited with a few famous Champagne quotes …

“Maybe I misjudged you Stromberg. Any man who drinks Dom Perignon ´52 can´t be all bad.”
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

“My dear girl, there are some things that just aren’t done, such as drinking Dom Perignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s just as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!”
Goldfinger (1964)

It is, however, known that Taittinger was author Ian Fleming’s favourite Champagne and there are more references to Taittinger in his Bond novels than any other Champagne.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S
The elegant Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s who was a huge Champagne lover often opening a bottle before breakfast.  Hence the response from Paul Varjak … ”I don’t think I’ve ever drunk champagne before breakfast before. With breakfast on several occasions, but never before before.”

MARILYN MONROE
The gorgeous MM consumed her fair share of Champagne in the movies during her short career and even suggested a bizarre food pairing in The Seven Year Itch … “Hey, did you ever try dunking a potato chip in Champagne? It’s real crazy!”  I think I will give that one a miss though.

CASABLANCA
Champagne flows copiously in the film Casablanca and my favourite quote is from Rick Blaine “Henri wants us to finish this bottle, then three more. He says he’ll water his garden with champagne before he lets the Germans drink any of it.”

CHAMPAGNE
Yes, there’s an actual film titled Champagne.  A 1928 silent movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock, with an iconic opening and closing scene filmed through the bottom of a champagne flute.

THE GREAT GATSBY
Probably the movie with the most references to Champagne, is Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel.  Scene after scene featuring Jay Gatsby sees corks being popped, and always the same Champagne,
Moët & Chandon.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
And sweetie darlings, one cannot have a list about Champagne Through The Movies, without the Bollinger drinking duo Edina and Patsy.

Here’s a few more images from Champagne in the movies you might recognise.

If I’ve not listed your favourite Champagne featured movie, give it a shout-out in the comments.

  1. There’s a movie called Champagne Charlie, about the life of Charles Heidsieck. Charlie is played by a very young Hugh Grant, I believe the movie is even available on Youtube. Interesting movie, although it never became a blockbuster.

    Cheers,
