Why I Do What I Do

I often receive messages and mails asking why I do what I do … in a nutshell, Champagne is my Passion Project.

It all started because of my love of Champagne.  I am not an expert nor do I have any qualifictions in the field.  What I know is what I have learnt through reading, talking to experts, and a number of trips to Champagne.

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “What is your favorite champagne?”  Ask me my favorite make of car, my favorite luxury brand, even my favorite animal, no problem.  Ask me my favorite champagne, and this is my reply ..

There are so many cuvées available and there is one for every occasion, every mood, every meal.  For me it’s about expanding my palate and trying different styles.  I don’t believe there are good champagnes and bad champagnes, just different champagnes.  You need to know when to drink a certain style, you probably won’t have a demi-sec at breakfast, but it might very well pair perfectly with a tart desert late at night.  And that means you have to be open to experimenting with different blends and styles, there is a huge variety available.

I try to visit Champagne at least every 18 months to 2 years and always visit new houses and growers I have not yet been to before.  Everybody’s story is different and unique.  My last trip ignited a passion for the smaller producers and growers and I had incredible visits with a few of these as well as some of my favorite Grand Maisons.

Visiting a smaller producer is an experience completely different to visiting a large house where you would normally be part of a big tour group.  Getting to know the family of the house, chatting and tasting their wines and learning from their years of experience is priceless.

As said, what I do is purely because of my love for Champagne. I drink champagne almost daily, and very seldom drink anything else. And yes, it’s an expensive Passion Project. It makes me no money at all, but it has made me incredible connections and friends and given me some phenomenal experiences. And although I have been approached by non-champagne brands to collaborate and advertise, I have declined and decided to stay true to the reason I started all of this in the first place, namely Champagne.

And so for now, this is what it remains … a Passion Project, and I’ll happily toast to that.
